How to Create a New Vision for Your Career (Part II)

This is the second in our three-part series to help you begin to re-imagine what’s possible in your career. We want to help you take steps in the direction of a career that is meaningful and fulfilling. Something you take ownership of and craft with intention.

Last week you got clear on your values, this week we want you to explore the possibilities.

Whether you’re seeking a promotion, about to retire, starting out, or ready to start a business. Follow along in this series and take these steps BEFORE making any big decisions. This is meant to help you get unstuck and inspired in your career.

Part Two: The Single Question that Can Get You to New Possibility in Your Career

What do you want the next phase of your career (and life) to look and feel like?

A big question in some ways. But small relative to the things we usually ask ourselves, like what do you want to be when you grow up. As if what you do is all you’ll be and whatever you choose is fixed. As someone who has had many jobs but one singular career with a clear through line around storytelling, I am proof that thinking of your career in phases and iteration and being driven by the values you identified last week can take you very far.

But we don’t want you to just say, “oh, I want financial security and to be successful,” and leave it at that. No, we want you to taste, feel, and smell what it looks like. For this we have a Re-Work exercise from our Creativity workshop to help you. It’s called the Ideal Day exercise and also lives in our workbook. Download the exercise here.

But I’d like to add a bit more detail to the downloaded assignment. Really spend some time getting creative and imagining it. Where are you, what time do you wake up? Who is there throughout the day? What do you eat? And wear. Paint the picture of your full day in detail. Use whatever format works for your brain, write, draw pictures, record a voice note.

Once you do it, put it away for a few days. Let it steep a little in your subconscious.

The step after this is deciding what to bring to life from that day in the short and long term. While you can’t rebuild your life around your ideal day in a day. You can reorient your career to get you on the path that’ll get you there.

So.

What do you want the next phase of your career to look like?

And, if you’re ready to start exploring change with the support of a community behind you, join us for New Visions on October 22nd. It’s a powerful online workshop experience that gets you to clarity and action in your career in a short afternoon.
